Can an employee be given a written warning for refusing to do overtime on a weekend?

Someone where I work was asked to do overtime and said no to it and was told he would be given a written warning for this. Details about how the employee carries out his duties were dragged into the equation also. Is the employer entitled to do this? From my point of view it just seems wrong.
